Have I got a treat for you for this StaySweet feature! Forget about Peanut Butter and Cookie Spreads for a minute and take a look at this heaven-sent jar of Yema Spread by Chavaro Handcrafted!
For those of you who don’t know what yema is, it is a creamy, chewy, custard candy that Filipinos inherited from the Spanish! Yema means yolk in Spanish. I’ve loved this sweet treat ever since I first had it back when I was still in grade school. It was one of those things that my classmates would make at home and sell in the classroom. 3 pieces for 1 peso!
I came across this jewel of a bread spread at Mercado Locale; SM Lanang Premiere’s mall-based bazaar. I immediately had it for breakfast the day after; spread on top of fresh pandesal. The taste brought me back to that time I first had yema. It tasted that authentic! Like, literally, perfectly melted yema!
The sweetness was just right that I just had to have a spoonful after I finished my pandesal! I could also tell it wasn’t too sweet because my mom had it for three consecutive breakfasts and didn’t complain about me buying something too sweet!
It also makes me proud to know that this is proudly Pinoy made and that there are no preservatives added! You’re guaranteed that everything is fresh!
If you want your very own jar (or jars) of Yema Spread, you can get them from Chavaro’s Davao. A 320 gms jar is only P180! Their new jars are slightly bigger and square so you get more bang for your buck! Plus, the packaging is awesome!
