Lemon Fresh has seen better days.

After the climactic battle in Babel, she finds herself separated from Ezekiel and Cricket in the wastelands. Lemon’s abilities to manipulate electricity mark her as a deviate, and deadly corporate operatives are hunting her to use as a weapon in the war between BioMaas Incorporated and Daedelus Technologies. Instead, Lemon finds herself falling in with a group of fellow deviates—a band of teenagers with astonishing abilities, led by an enigmatic figure known as the Major, who may hold the secrets to Lemon’s past.

Meanwhile, Cricket finds himself in possession of the puritanical Brotherhood, a religious cult set for a head-on collision with the Major and his band. Searching for Lemon, Ezekiel finds a strange ally in an old enemy, and uncovers a plot that may see him reunited with his beloved Ana.

And inside Babel, a remade Eve hatches a plan to bring an end to the world.

The Bookish Bro Says

First of all, I would like to thank Raf of The Royal Polar Bear Reads and Penguin Random House for hosting this blog tour and for sending us Advanced Readers Copies of DEV1AT3 in exchange for an honest review. Fair warning, there may be spoilers ahead.

Ah~ Back at it with the gang from LIFEL1K3. Eve, Lemon Fresh, Cricket, Ezekiel, and a few other characters from book one return in this amazing sequel that Mister Kristoff has decided to bless us with.

Before I talk about the second book, I just want everyone to know how much I LOVED the first one. LIKEL1K3 was the very first book I read authored by Jay Kristoff, and it blew. me. away. I remember it had a bit of a slow start, but the pacing picked up and I was instantly hooked. What I remember the most were the mind blowing revelations that Kristoff masterfully unveiled at the end of the book. It was revelation after revelation after revelation… and then the book ends, leaving me slack-jawed and positively hungry for the sequel! Thankfully, I joined this blog tour!

The story immediately picks up at the start of DEV1AT3 and Kristoff continues to amaze me. After the battle in Babel, Lemon Fresh, Ezekiel, and Cricket get separated from each other. We go through DEV1AT3 through the perspectives of our three heroes, plus some bits through Eve’s point of view. They each get their own little problems which they’ve had to overcome; Lemon Fresh is being hunted by BioMaas and Daedalus, Ezekiel has to stop his brothers and sisters from taking over the world, Cricket has become a WarBot for a crazy cult, and Eve is having an internal struggle while being on the hunt for Ana Monrova’s body. They also meet unexpected allies while struggling to survive the events that happen in book two; a group of deviates, a former enemy, and a bot with the uncanny skill to bend the three laws!

My Rating

4 of 5

It’s a roller coaster ride of a sequel, with Jay’s signature jaw-dropping revelations peppered throughout the book, tons of dynamic battle scenes, a new cast of lovable characters, and (yet again) a cliffhanger ending ! If you’ve read LIFEL1K3, then there’s really no question whether you should get DEV1AT3. (The answer is yes, in case it wasn’t obvious enough for you.)
