The Korean Wave (or Hallyu) has seen many years of growth and judging by the ever-growing number of fans that K-Pop groups are amassing up until this year, the wave is showing no signs of dropping.
Because of this wave, people who don’t listen to K-Pop would still know famous Korean group names such as BTS and Blackpink. Truly, the power of song and music transcends boundaries.
For this blog post, however, I want to talk about a Korean singer who may not have the same kind of cult following that groups such as EXO or TWICE have. She doesn’t sing with a group, she doesn’t do complicated dances. But with the power of her voice alone, she has moved mountains. More importantly, she has moved the hearts of her listeners and her fans, and among them, vocal coaches and legends such as Michael Bolton, Seth Riggs, and “the hitman” himself, David Foster.
I am talking about none other than Kim So-Hyang (more commonly known as SoHyang).
I first discovered her via a Korean friend who showed me the video above. He told me it was a folk song sung by a Korean singer. He knew I was into K-Pop so he decided to share it with me. What I heard absolutely blew my mind and sent chills up and down my spine. She sang like an angel in the beginning and continued on to shatter the heavens with her voice. I was in love, and it only snowballed from there.
I searched for more of her performances, listening to them like they were drugs. And each and every time, she bowled me over with her talent.
And boy, was I happy when I found out she could sing perfectly in English! She immediately became my most favorite singer. I didn’t think she could do anything to make me love her more until I read up about her life.
Her parents divorced when she was in high school, and she experienced great difficulties during her early years. Soon after marrying at the age of 20, she was diagnosed with uterine cancer. She was able to survive the cancer but was rendered infertile. And through all this, she remained a strong and devout Christian, always offering her songs and performances to God, and always thanking God for the blessings she has.
According to Sohyang, her goal is to use her voice to comfort people who are going through difficult times.
She has now become more than just my favorite singer, more than just a phenomenal voice. She is an inspiration, and she is a living testament that God is and will always be there for you. No matter the hardships, no matter the problems, no matter the heartaches and the losses. She persevered and she never let go of God.
I think that is what makes her such a powerful force, not just in music but as a force of positivity in this world. And I am forever thankful that God decided to share her talent with the whole world.
I know her singing style and her voice may not be everyone’s type. I get that. The point of this blog post isn’t to shove her performances down anyone’s throats. But I want to spread her positivity, her strong faith, her good example. And if you happen to love her performances and her talent, then it’s a win-win situation!
But, I mean, come on! If you listened to even ONE of the performances I linked in this blog post, and I mean REALLY listened, you’ll find that she doesn’t just have the ability to sing really high notes, but that her technique is flawless as well.
If you don’t believe me, maybe you’ll believe these guys!
There are a ton of reactions on youtube but these YouTubers are my favorites. They tell you about her technique and how she sings. It’s a learning experience for all you singers out there!
Well, that’s all I really wanted to say about this amazing person. I’ve been listening to her since 2013, I think, and I don’t see me stopping any time soon. Tell me what you think about her in the comments!
Cheers, everyone! And have a blessed day!
